THE MONTREAL GAZETTE
As European settlers and their descendants began colonizing North America a few centuries ago, they started to forbid First Nations aboriginals from practising their traditions, religions and speaking their own languages. It was a cultural genocide that most civilized people today look back upon with disgust.
We are now seeing a repeat in history where the Quebec government is doing its best to dissuade people from speaking any language other than French and shed their religious-cultural identities through its proposed secularism charter.
I wonder what people a century or two from now will think about our present-day government.
