Developer signs deals with First Nations groups for ocean power studies

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada

hydroworld.com

Western Tidal Holdings has executed an Investigative Use License Agreement with the Shishalh Nation, allowing the ocean energy developer to explore the development of tidal power projects.

The agreement establishes a "constructive working relationship", Western Tidal said, which will allow the group to conduct feasibility studies for a project in Agamemnon Channel in northern Vancouver.

The agreement also gives Western Tidal an investigative use license for tidal power at Skookumchuck, though any studies or development must first be expressly approved by the Shishalh chief and council.

"This agreement is a prime example of how Shishalh stewards its land," Chief Garry Feschuk said. "We are ensuring that our resources are protected and that development occurs in a sustainable manner.

"Western Tidal engaged with the nation early with the goal of creating collaboration. We applaud them and expect all proponents to follow their example."

Western Tidal said it has also collaborated with other First Nations groups and Vancouver's Ministry of Forest, Land and Natural Resources Operations for investigative permits at 14 other unnamed project sites.

The group is a subsidiary of Tribute Resources Inc., which acquired the group in August 2013.
