Burns Lake First Nations band pulls pipeline support

By Ada Slivinski, QMI Agency Vancouver

First Nations band Nee-Tahi-Buhn near Burns Lake has revoked its support of the Northern Gateway pipeline project and is instead endorsing an alternative pipeline proposal announced Monday by Eagle Spirit Energy Holdings Ltd. and the Aquilini Group.

Calvin Helin, chairman and president of Eagle Spirit said he has been consulting with First Nations for over a year and is working with more than 50% of the bands in Northern B.C., although he could not reveal which ones because it would be a violation of a non-disclosure agreement.

He was unable to provide a specific proposed pipeline route or termination point.

“It’s going to go where First Nations want it to go,” he said.

He said the idea is for the pipeline to transport synthetic crude rather than bitumen.

When asked if this is just about First Nations wanting a piece of the oil revenue pie, Helin said, “What’s wrong with First Nations wanting to have some economic power?”
