This week, Dr. Chandrakant Shah, reported to Toronto city council that life expectancy among aboriginals served by the city’s clinics and agencies is 37 years. Compare this with Somalia (48 years), and the Central African Republic (47 years). For shame Canada!
In the midst of plenty, our aboriginals live in the Third World – despite the fact that our colonial forefathers promised them equality. Yet during Confederation, they were ignored. What followed was broken treaties, reservations, and residential schools.
It’s time to have an honest and thoughtful debate on Canada’s early history, and start a re-evaluation of our relationship with the First Nations. Without that, nothing will change.
