Two weeks after the Mount Polley mine disaster the government is launching an independent third party investigation into that spill.
The panel is being given the power to compel testimony and with the blessing of the first nations in the area as well the government has ordered inspections for every tailing pond at every mine in the province by the end of the year. A three member panel will conduct the investigation an inquiry that will be paid for by Imperial Metals which operates the mine. Recommendations are expected 5 months from now by the end of January, 2015.
That announcement is welcome news for First Nations bands in the Williams Lake and Likely areas. The Secwepemc people who gathered this weekend at the Neskonlith First Nation are focused on helping those affected by the tailings pond disaster.
