BALA - The Wahta Mohawks are staging a protest today at the Bala Portage.
The event, called a “Portage-In” by the First Nations group, is in objection to what they claim is “the obstruction of the traditional and historic Bala Portage.”
In a press release, the Wahta Mohawks say that the new hydro-electric generation facility, proposed to be constructed on the Bala Portage, located between the Moon River and Lake Muskoka, would eliminate the traditional and historic portage that the Wahta Mohawk and other First Nations have used for generations.
The protest will begin at 11 a.m.There will be a portage of canoes across the portage.
