Charges laid in Kamloops murder of First Nations teen

By Ian Austin, The Province

The parents of a Terrace teenager murdered in late 2012 are relieved that charges have finally been laid in their daughter’s death.

The body of C.J. Fowler, 16, was found on Dec. 5, 2012, just off a roadway in a ravine near Guerin Creek.

At a Kamloops RCMP news conference, father Glen Wilson read out an emotional statement as he stood alongside Matilda Fowler, C.J.’s mother.

Wilson and Fowler were in Kamloops on the weekend to bless the location where their daughter’s body was found when they got some unexpected and welcome news from police that an arrest had finally been made.

“When we were told, me and Matilda actually both sighed at the same time — a sigh of relief, happiness,” Wilson said.

“Matilda actually wanted to jump, dance and scream, but she was afraid that the camera was going, the microphone was going in the room (at the Kamloops RCMP detachment).”

Wilson said the arrest comes after 13 months of prayer for some closure in their daughter’s untimely death.

“We prayed day and night, before we went to bed and before we got up in the morning,” said the grieving father. “Our prayers and thoughts have been answered.

“We’re just so overwhelmed at the work the Kamloops RCMP has done.”

Damien Lawrence Taylor, 22, has been charged with one count of murder.

Taylor had been dating Fowler at the time of her death. The two were both from the Terrace area, and had travelled to Kamloops to meet friends.

A member of the Gitanmaax First Nation, Summer Star Elizabeth Krista-Lee Fowler was last seen leaving a local hospital in the early morning of Dec. 5, 2012, walking down a street to catch a bus back to Terrace.

Shortly after the teen’s death, Fowler’s family joined First Nations leaders in a call for a national inquiry into the disappearance and deaths of aboriginal women across Canada.

Taylor is expected to appear Monday in provincial court in Kamloops.
